Howie Mandel’s “Watusi”

This morning Jesse texted me.

Have you seen the Howie Mandel Watusi video? I thought of you…

I replied.

E-mail it to me.

He e-mailed me the link.

I replied.

I have never seen that before, but it might have changed my life. For the worse.

He replied.

Yeah, right?
It’s amazing- I hate it so much – yet it also predates Tim & Eric and reminds me so much of their aesthetic and what they mock and love – but it has no irony – but then that makes it more real – but the real is a bad – but I hate it – I can’t stop watching it – I love it – I hate Howie Mandel – but I understand myself better – but I don’t like what I now know.

I finished the chain off with this message.

You are getting Black Lasered in about 6 minutes.

I present this here for you all so that you understand what it is I am working with. There are definitely bright points, this being one of them.

Terry Gilliam on Kubrick VS. Spielberg

Even though he comes off as a little bit of a dick, Gilliam’s comment on the nature of art is valuable and true. Effectively, that the best art leaves strings hanging for the viewer/reader/whateverer to figure out for themselves which, I believe, creates a more intimate experience. There’s nothing like having to work for comprehension to help make a thing feel like it is your own, to build a bond with a work, to internalize it, to have it affect you. When handed all the answers, things are boring as hell. It’s one of my major pet peeves with YA fiction and, really, a lot of SF/F. I get so bored when everything is explained. Just put things in there and let us work it out through context. That is one of the things I really enjoyed about Gene Wolfe’s work. Creativity is problem solving. Jeez, that’s like my new mantra.

And like women, the easy ones are boring. There’s nothing more boring than a woman who throws herself at you. It’s the difficult ones we all like and go after. Art. Women. Women. Art. They are the same.

Time-lapse from the ISS

Have you ever wondered what I, as reigning Space Pope, sees every day as I sail over your puny, insignificant world deciding whether today shall be the day I raze your filthy planet with fire? It looks a lot like this. Of course, I see many more worlds filled with many more people more deserving of life than you pitiful humans.

Just in case you needed a little inspiration to kick off your week with flair this Monday morning…

I’ve always found this episode to be the most eminently quotable Ranier Wolfcastle episode of The Simpsons (because it also got us this), followed closely by the film festival episode which gave us this and this. Oh god, there are so many of them. So many!

How can we choose?!?

Quantum levitation

I know, I know. You’ve seen this. I’m slow to the party. But you know what? You can go to hell. This is too awesome not to put on The Black Laser.

DO YOU SEE THE THING!? IT’S FLOATING. SCIENCE IS AWESOME.

It’s Okay to Be Smart has a description of how it works:

What you start with is an inert disc, in this case a crystal sapphire wafer. That wafer is then coated with a superconductor called yttrium barium copper oxide. When superconductors get very cold (like liquid nitrogen cold) they conduct electricity with no loss of energy, which normal conducting materials like copper can’t do.

Superconductors hate magnetic fields (when cold enough), and normally would just repel the magnetic force and float in a wobbly fashion. But because the superconductor is so thin in this case, tiny imperfections allow some magnetic forces through. These little magnetic channels are called flux tubes:

The flux tubes cause the magnetic field to be “locked” in all three dimensions, which is why the disk remains in whatever position it starts in, levitating around the magnets.

Drier explanations here and here.

Charles sent me this video the other day and the thing we started talking about immediately was whether or not the floating would decay over time or if the super cooled slug would just fall when it warmed up so much that it was no longer able to maintain the quantum lock. And then we recognized that we were total nerds, but you knew that already, didn’t you?

Wake Up and Dance: A Series of Short Films

Sarah decided that it was a good idea to wake up every morning for nearly a week and shoot a video of herself dancing.

Her description:

For a week I’m going to wake up, put on my clothes and dance like an idiot. DEAL WITH IT!
Note: There is nothing special about these videos!
sarahrox.com For your health!

She’s wrong, of course. There is something special about these videos. I think they’re genius even if she doesn’t. But, that’s my prerogative and this is my website, so if I say they’re awesome, they are. I mean, by all means, please judge for yourself, but understand that if you disagree with me, there is going to be a problem.

Day 1: Holy Ghost! – “Wait & See”

Day 2: M83 – “Midnight City”

Day 3: Fab Samperi – “Listen Up”

Day 4: Deadmau5 – “Raise Your Weapon (Madeon Extended Remix)”

See? Genius.
