Six hours of amazing Kraftwerk jams

I know, you didn’t wake up this morning and think, Man, you know what I need today? 6 hours of awesome Kraftwerk jams. I find that pretty weird since I’m not sure a day goes by that I don’t think that.

Luckily for you, DJ Food—Matt Black and Jonathan More(Coldcut) from Ninjatune—have been spending all of March posting about Kraftwerk after being inspired by their upcoming dates at MOMA. Additionally, they’ve put out six hour-long mixes of Kraftwerk remixes, covers, and originals interlaced with interview audio and other soundbits from Kraftwerk’s legendary career.

How great are these? Pretty great. Enjoy!

The Shoes’ “Time to Dance”

This might be one of the best music videos I’ve seen in ages. I think Jake Gyllenhaal plays an incredible version of a hipster hipster-hating Patrick Bateman here. I also really love the intercutting between banal day to day shit (getting a haircut, eating dinner, staring at birds) and murdering a bunch of kids in silly outfits with deliberate haircuts. Is there anything you don’t like about this video? I can’t think of a single thing. Beautifully shot, beautifully acted, beautifully cut. It’s amazing. The song is great too and the incredibly violent imagery juxtaposed to a song calling for dancing is fantastic.

Wonderful!

“Game On”

Uh, I think this might be my new favorite song of forever. Except for all the factual errors, right wing rhetoric, terrible taste, horror, and general fundamentalist nonsense. I like everything but those things. Oh, yeah, and the music is pretty fucking bad.

Man, I love santorum. The guy, though, not so much.

Familjen’s “Det snurrar i min skalle”

I think the moment I realized that the video for Familjen’s “Det snurrar i min skalle” was brilliant was when you first see the little blonde boy hitting the cymbal in time to the beat. Before that, I was a little unsure, but I did not leave disappointed. Everything I know about Familjen (Swedish for “The Family”) comes from the Spotify blurb which I could copy paste for you guys, but instead I’ll just link you to the artist page.

Charles sent me this video earlier after a long discussion about late 90s/early 00s drum & bass and few back-and-forths of videos of people dancing to music they’re not dancing to. I dig the synthpop styling of the track and the 60s Swedish church footage they used to make the video. It’s real good.

Pulp’s “Mis-Shapes”

Much has been written on The Black Laser about Pulp. I am a fan. A big fan. But, until recently, Pulp had not uploaded this video to the Youtubes. So, here it is: the video from the first track off 1995’s Different Class, “Mis-Shapes”. I don’t have a lot to say about it. It’s pretty great and the song too. Enjoy.

Also, I can’t possibly express how super mega fucking excited I am to go see Pulp perform at Radio City Music Hall in April. LIKE WHOA. I have an extra ticket too. Anyone want to go?

Christian Mistress’ “Pentagram and Crucifix”

I gambled recently and pre-ordered the LP of Christian Mistress’ new album Possession based on some sample tracks I’d heard online. It arrived a week or so ago and it is pretty amazing. I am really into this whole throw-back, female-lead-singer metal thing that’s happening right now. As much as I like me some face-melting grindcore and black metal, sometimes you just want punchy, no bullshit, Sabbath-y riffs with a lady wailing on top. Who doesn’t like that? Bands like Christian Mistress, Blood Ceremony, and Witch Mountain are really scratching an inch for me that I had no idea existed. I am glad, however, that it was called to my attention. Scratch me! That so many of these bands come from the Pacific Northwest can’t be a coincidence either. Time for a roadtrip!

Even the video for this song, the first off their new record, is a throw-back. It looks like it was shot in 16mm black and white reversal, a format all my other film school graduate friends will have fond memories of working with. The song is awesome too. Perhaps not the best example of what singer Christine Davis can do when she’s really pushing her voice (listen to “Black To Gold” instead), the song still serves as a perfect example of what Christian Mistress is about on Possession: riffs, guitar interplay, driving beats, and a powerful female lead. If you don’t like this track, you won’t like the record. But, what’s not to like about this track?

Check out their Bandcamp. Christian Mistress.

Mouse On Mars’ “Polaroyced”

Do you remember how in college I used to listen to Idiology basically on repeat? You don’t? What’s wrong with your memory? Go to a doctor.

Mouse on Mars is back with a forthcoming record after a many-year hiatus and they’ve released this video for their first single “Polaroyced”. At the beginning you think the video is going to be a super simple video of El Luchador De Oro dancing around the back streets of Venice, CA, but it ends up being so much more. Floating golden dogs! Exploding palms! Glitter everywhere!

Rio, you’re going to love this one.
