This morning I was reading through my Twitter stream and saw a tweet by BoingBoing called Eldritch Effulgence: HP Lovecraft’s favorite words. Being a Lovecraft fan, I clicked through to discover that “Abnormal” was Lovecraft’s favorite word. I also read that the originator of the list, one Cthulhu Chick, was working on an eBook of the complete works of H.P. Lovecraft. I then became keenly aware of a problem I had not realized I had yesterday: I had absolutely NO Lovecraft on my Kindle. I have Tolstoy and Melville and Poe and all sorts of other books in the public domain, but not a single work by the master of weird fiction. Lame!

I clicked through to the original article from BoingBoing to see if I could find some information on the forthcoming eBook. Right there at the top of the post was even more than I could have hoped for. And I quote,

Update: The free eBook of Lovecraft’s Complete Works is done and can be downloaded here.

Victory! Not only was the book finished, but it was free–exactly as much as I ever want to pay for an eBook that I cannot trade, give away, or resell!

If there are any of you out there who have never read Lovecraft and have no idea just how much of an influence he has been on modern horror, science fiction, and heavy metal, then you owe it to yourself to download the eBook and get reading. The price for admittance is just a little time and your curiosity. Jump in. Those of you who know Lovecraft probably haven’t even read this far before downloading the eBook.

It’s available for Nook (epub) and Kindle (mobi), meaning you can read it on just about any device that has a screen. Get it here: Complete Works of H.P. Lovecraft

Thank me later.

I know you woke up this morning thinking, “Fuck. I need some super sweet French space synth music in my life in a serious as hell way. Right now. I can’t fucking wait!”

GUESS WHAT!?

It’s your lucky day. Courtesy of Aesop Dekker at Cosmic Hearse, I bring you six albums of some of the most perfect cheese ever committed to tape. It might be perfect. And if you don’t enjoy it, I feel for your soul since it will spend eternity in hell*.

Get the albums here: Rockets Beaucoup

When you’ve listened to them all and feel like you wanted to explore the outer regions of space with yours truly, The Space Pope, come on back and tell me why I should take you with me and how disappointed you’re going to be when I don’t.

*The Black Laser does not actually condone belief in Hell or, by extension, Heaven.

Don’t lie. This morning you woke up thinking, Man, I could really go for a complete collection of Bach’s organ works in handy AAC format. And you didn’t have a SLIGHTLY dirty thought about the phrase “Bach’s organ works”. See? Aren’t we so grown up?

Well, you’re in luck!

Recently, James Kibbie, Professor of Organ at the University of Michigan, recorded and released all 270 of Bach’s organ works. What’s better is that he released them all for free.

Holy shit! Awesome! Organy!

You want ‘em? Go get them here: James Kibbie & Bach’s Complete Organ Works

This is what I am listening to right this moment and I think that, as a reader of The Black Laser, you should trust my opinion and listen to it too. Do try and listen to it on a decent set of speakers or you’re going to miss all the fat ass low end in these dirty, DIRTY jams.

I think that A-trak is my favorite DJ right now. Between him and Diplo, and their propensity to drop free music on you every few weeks, I’m up to my ears in filthy beats and I love it so much.

If you want your own copy, head on over to A-trak’s Bandcamp page and download the hell out of it.

My favorite French blackened metal band, Celeste, continue their (s)ification of metal on their newest release, Morte(s) Nee(s). I don’t have any thoughts yet since I am just now listening to it for the first time, but I do know that you should get yourself over to their site at denovali.com and download the album for free.

Legally.

Awesome metal for completely free? Awesome. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this band. Just do it.

I have never been a huge fan of Black Metal. There is something about it that has never appealed to me. It’s not the culture surrounding it, but something about the style, the musical tropes they engage, the synths, the high pitched scream, whatever, that just has never appealed to me that much. I mean, I’ve listened to as much Emperor as the next guy, but I would not call myself a Black Metal aficionado. It’s always a bit “meh” to me.

When I read a post on Metal Sucks in August about the band Celeste, my eyes immediately went to the phrase “Black Metal” in the article as I skimmed it. But I also saw that they had two albums available for free download, so I thought, Fuck it, right? How horrible could they be?

And holy living fuck am I glad I downloaded them. The “Black Metal” thing completely threw me off initially, but it’s really only a faint Black tint in the music, not full bore Black Metal. I don’t think French lyrics have ever sounded this awesome. Of course, I don’t understand a word, but since when have I judged my enjoyment of metal music on whether or not I could understand the lyrics? The songs possess a savage intensity and rawness that seems to be lacking from so much modern Heavy Metal music. It’s not a horrid mess of bad production, but it’s also not super clean, super mastered, bland. There is fire and darkness in the music and they sound like no other band in my collection, high praise to be certain. In an age when so many genres and subgenres are basically interchangeable, to release a record with a sound that stands apart from the crowd is a significant achievement, one which Celeste has accomplished. They are one of the freshest bands I’ve heard since I encountered their fellow Frenchmen, Gojira.

Here are a few sample tracks.

If you have any remaining reservations about how amazing this band is, do yourself a favor and just download the records. If you don’t have reservations, you’re probably downloading already.

Yes, I know. You’re welcome.
