Art is important for any home.
by The Wizard on Mar.29, 2010, under Thoughts
About a million years ago I went to the Guggenheim with my friends Chris and Ryan when they were in town for a little visit. We wandered into the permanent collection and saw what I consider to be the most beautiful painting ever created. This is it.
That's right. It's a painting of a lobster fighting a cat. By Pablo Picasso. Is it not the finest piece of artwork you've ever seen? The Guggenheim has a total bullshit write-up of the painting on their site, but I like to think that we're seeing the result of kooky, old Picasso making something he thinks is funny for a friend. Like, "Hey dude, we're friends, I made you this rad painting of a lobster fighting a cat. Sweet. See you later!"
I have a print of this painting hanging in my living room right now. It's awesome.
I have some other art too. I have three small, original paintings by artist R. Nicholas Kuszyk of robots. Today I also purchased a print of a piece called "Zombies vs Unicorns" from Josh Cochran.
I'm pretty excited about this one. I definitely need to get it framed.
I also want to print out a bunch of photos nice and big and frame them and place them around the apartment. Unfortunately, Adorama is closed for Passover so I'll have to wait a little bit. Not really a problem.
There has always been one piece of art I've never seemed to able to find as a decent sized print. It's this.
Ok. Do me a favor and look at this painting. Do you see the surly clown sitting there having a drink, smoking a cigarette, and being ignored by the patrons? It's totally awesome, right? I know. It's a painting called "Soir Bleu" by Edward Hopper, who you might know by his iconic "Night Hawks". The real painting lives at the Whitney here in New York and while I'd like to steal the original, I think I'll make due with a print. The problem has always been that I've never been able to find a decent sized print of the work. I've seen posters, but those are lame. I've seen post cards, but those are tiny. But, I've never seen a good sized print.
Until today. While chit chatting with a friend on IM about artwork, I found that the Whitney will make me a 24x40 inch print for 85.00. Seriously? I'd be stupid not to do that. It's absolutely worth the 85 bucks for something that big to put in my apartment. I think it would look magnificent hanging in my house opposite my Picasso. I'm not sure yet where the Unicorn and Zombie piece will go, but I'm sure I'll find a home for it.
Are there any things you guys think I should add to my collection of decoration for my new place? Nothing make a home feel like a home as quickly as hanging things on the wall and having furniture. After a Saturday bonanza at Ikea, the latter is accounted for. Suggestions, friends?
Is this the best picture ever?

Birdy Nam Nam's "The Parachute Ending"
by The Wizard on Sep.17, 2009, under Music, Music Videos
With shades of The Fantastic Planet, Heavy Metal, and Ralph Bakshi films, yet combining a modern electro aesthetic, Birdy Nam Nam's video for "The Parachute Ending" is everything you could hope for in a video. Rainbow eyed robot in a pimp suit? Check. Vaguely sexual tentacle imagery? Check. Well synchronized meteor statues falling from space? Check. Gorgeous pastel palette? Check. Anthropomorphic skull buildings? Psychedelic teleportation processes? Mammoth space robot guys shooting cubes from their chests? Check, check, and check.
I don't know who Birdy Nam Nam are, but my suspicion is that they are French (a quick Google reveals that I was right). They've got a clearly-inspired-by-Daft-Punk thing happening in their music which, while not the most original thing in the world, is totally solid.
All in all, it's a killer video.
On Michael Jackson's passing...
by The Wizard on Jun.26, 2009, under About Music, Music, Thoughts
I've been balling my eyes out all night because it's always sad when washed up, child molesting monsters die suddenly of drug overdoses after living like recluses for over a decade. Sure, his contributions to the musical landscape were massive...20 years ago. He changed what it means to be a megastar, what it means to be a pop icon. But let's face it—the man was a ruined, sick person. Has he contributed anything in the last ten years or so but scandal and public outrage? And all of these stars sending out press releases about how sad they are? Yeah, right. Whatever, guys. Where were you when he was being accused of child molestation? Oh, nowhere? WHAT A FUCKING SURPRISE, YOU WORTHLESS FAIRWEATHER FUCKS. What a complete load of bullshit. To be perfectly honest, Michael's probably in less pain now than when he was alive. And he was such an adorable kid...
I feel much worse about Farrah Fawcett's death after a protracted battle with cancer. THAT is tragic.
But, so I don't come off as a total creep and hater, here's my favorite single Michael Jackson moment of all time.
Did you see that? He turned into a FUCKING ROBOT. Awesome. The only way it could have been better is if he'd been riding a unicorn or a dragon or some shit. If only all the plastic surgery he'd had in real life had turned him into a robot who rode a dragon unicorn and not a scary old white woman who wore pajamas to her court dates.
Here's another gem from MJ's career.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1959621678974565543Oh shit. That's Weird Al. Sorry.
Also, did you ever play that Moonwalker game on the Genesis? It was pretty awesome when I was like 8, but I played it like a year ago or whatever and it totally sucked.
Catch you on the go around, MJ.
Röyksopp's "The Girl & The Robot"
by The Wizard on May.29, 2009, under Music, Music Videos
Remember when we met Robyn, Sweden's most famous popstar? Well, here she is again singing on Röyksopp's new single "The Girl & The Robot" from their most recent album Junior. This is the finest Girl/Robot love song I've heard in a while, at least since... well, I don't know the last time I heard a Girl/Robot love song. I was thinking of Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots by The Flaming Lips, but there's nothing like that on there.
Anyway, this video is super rad and the song is great, even if it's not my favorite from this record (that's a solid split between the two Karin Dreijer Andersson tracks, "This Must Be It" and "Tricky Tricky").
Enjoy!
