The Adventures of Baron Ambrosia

The embed's not working well. Click the image to watch it.

Justin Fornal, a friend of a friend of mine, is known as Baron Ambrosia, the eccentric host* of a local Bronx public access food show called “Bronx Flavor”. In tremendous news for him, he just created a pilot of his show for the Cooking Channel in which he searches through New Jersey for the elusive Jersey Devil fajitas. All in all, it’s a high energy, spastic, utterly silly trip through the highs and lows of north east New Jersey’s culinary destinations.

Give the pilot a look and let’s all hope it turns into something really great for him.

*He also created the strangest film I’ve ever seen.

Wagon Christ’s “Chunkothy”

I’ve always liked the name “Wagon Christ” though it sounds more like an industrial/ebm name than this mellow, sample-based groovy stuff here. But, that doesn’t mean that this video and track aren’t sweet, just that I think of buzzsaws and four on the floor beats and distorted vocals when I hear the words “Wagon” and “Christ” put together. Maybe I’m just mixing it all up with Velvet Acid Christ? That’s probably it. And maybe “wagon” is associated with Wumpscut???? Because that’s what I expect Wagon Christ to sound like, but he does not. Not even close.

I mean, has Luke Vibert ever put out a hard edged electronic music record? I have no idea. Probably not. It’s just that the name Wagon Christ is so evocative. Someone get this guy on Metropolis Records already. Christ.

Jeff Magnum is coming back to Brooklyn!

Man, I was super bummed when I missed Jeff’s Town Hall show recently. The show sold out within seconds and I was not nearly quick enough on the uptake to make it happen. Even worse, Charles ended up not going (what an asshole) and then didn’t even tell me he had extra tickets! WHAT AN ASSHOLE! But he made up for it yesterday when he sent me the link to the listing for Jeff’s January show at BAM. Everything is ok now, Charles.

Now, I don’t know if you’re a Neutral Milk Hotel fan or not (you should be), but I am so excited by the possibility of this show that I felt compelled to share it with all of you. Of course, I feel compelled to share all the time which is what has made this blog stay alive and bristling with nonsense.

Neutral Milk Hotel’s In The Aeroplane Over The Sea was one of those records that resonates strongly with people of a certain (read: my) age. I defy you to find anyone between 27 and 32 with even decent taste in music that doesn’t rank it as one of their all time favorites. Go, now! Before I get angry! Find someone! Anyone!

You can’t do it. That’s because they don’t exist.

Here’s a selection of my favorite tracks from the record.

Don’t you want to go right now?!? I know I do.

Die Antwoord’s “Fok Julle Naaiers”

Hell yes! Die Antwoord is back with a fresh single from their forthcoming record TEN$ION to be released on their new indie label Zef Records after a messy, public split from Interscope. You can’t blame them for leaving Interscope either since the label tried to water down Die Antwoord’s sound and image, to make them more pop-friendly. And that’s just plain wrong. Good on Die Antwoord for sticking to their guns and taking the artistic—if not commercial—high road.

The title of this track translates loosely to “Fuck you fuckers,” which is a perfect title. I was going to say the this video had a paucity of penises compared to their other ones, and then I got the end of the third minute and DJ Hitek came in with his “I’ll fuck you in the ass” section and all my worries about a lack of penises dissipated.

Just in case you needed a little inspiration to kick off your week with flair this Monday morning…

I’ve always found this episode to be the most eminently quotable Ranier Wolfcastle episode of The Simpsons (because it also got us this), followed closely by the film festival episode which gave us this and this. Oh god, there are so many of them. So many!

How can we choose?!?

Akwarian Sea Rebel’s “Urban Tropical Rebel Pop”

I have this friend Mandy and I think she’s pretty fucking cool. But what’s more is that she’s also this super rad musician who has just put out a new album of some soulful, dub-inspired, low tempo, electro hip hop and it’s awesome. Like really awesome. But don’t take my word for it… I mean, do take my word, but also listen to the album embedded above and go see an ASR show if you live in Brooklyn.

I started a Tumblr.

“Joe,” you ask, “isn’t The Black Laser already enough of a blog for you?”

“No,” I say. “The tumblr will serve an entirely different purpose.”

I guess the idea behind the Tumblr is to collect random crap from around the internet that wouldn’t necessarily warrant an entire post on The Black Laser. I mean, I already do a lot of that here, but it’s mostly videos and other things I like mixed in with actual Joe-generated content. The tumblr won’t have real content on it. Maybe I’ll post snippets of my better blog posts here on that thing, but, fuck, I don’t know. Really, I was just pretty bored at home tonight and since starting blogs is the 21 century’s equivalent of building train sets in the basement that’s what I did.

Head on over to Tumblr and check the new hotness out: The Black Laser’s Ray Gun*

*The name may change. Don’t look at me like that.
